We once taught that aesthetic quality/beauty could be objectively analyzed, at least in large part. We could say it's ok to not enjoy Chopin or Coltrane, but that we should recognize that they were "good". Once we decided to teach that beauty is purely subjective, our standards declined. Just when you think our musical standards can't decline further, someone pops up like ppcocaine and proves you wrong. Comments on social media praising Lil Nas X recent SNL performance were almost entirely political in nature, as if he was a social activist, but not a musician or musical performer. PPcocaine evidences the fact that pornography easily steals attention from music, and Lil Nas X that politics does the same. Music has been become a vehicle to deliver porn and political messages. I think we're better off keeping our porn, our politics, and our music separate.
