Every few years somebody reminds me of this album and check it out - only to be reminded that she barely had a voice. There's only so much that Becker, Fagen, Katz, and highly-paid session players can do!
I do remember hearing about this before it was released and having serious anticipation just because Walter and Donald and Gary were involved in it. Had been a long time since Gaucho/Nightfly and I was just desperate to hear something with that kind of vibe. I get what you're saying about her voice -- for me it's more that combination of limited range and limited control when veering outside the range. when I hear Interlude she sounds terrific, settled, in her element; some of the other songs when she goes higher it's less persuasive.
going to be curious to hear a take after you listen again....I was with it for a few days before posting and I was floored by the stuff I remembered -- most of S1 and the title track -- and not captured at all by the other tracks on S2......
Well, there's at least one bit of mid-80s digitech on this very nice track (too bad Ms Vela was given the bum's rush). While Jim Keltner (intermittently visible on the video at his drumkit) was and is, of course, a paragon of authenticity (although Jim WAS an early adapter to drum machines, sparingly), I'll note that Jimmy Bralower, whom you mention, used a drum machine exclusively. He was the day's go-to drum programmer. That's Bralower doing the drum-machine intro to Steve Winwood's "Higher Love." Nice guy, but MIDI thru and thru.
did not know that about Bralower! so was he a programmer or a drummer who played on syn-drums? here it sounds more like the latter. Higher Love could go either way...haha.

Just a pedantic footnote.

He was a very nice, modest guy, who hadn't been able to make it as a regular drummer, so he became the best at what he was able to do......
Wow. Played that cassette until it broke, then forgot about her. Headed to YT now 👍
Damn, I thought I was the single owner of that (God forgive me) cassette.
