Clearly Young by himself doesn't have enough suck to move Spotify. However it's not hard to imagine a critical mass of artists asserting themselves: Drake, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, BTS. That is a huge base of Spotify spins. Then they'd have a real problem.
They won't follow. Because of personal profit, and because Young's decision to frame his protest in the language of ultimatum doomed his effort from the beginning. Removing his music, with a statement, challenging Spotify to speak to his complaint after the fact, that would have been a principled and effective strategy. #fail, Neil.
I'd like to insert "short" to your description of Rogan, Tom: "A [short], longwinded talker..." @mavenworks Rogan is telling everyone who is young and healthy not to get the vaccine. Big problem with that. Free speech is one thing, selling snake oil and misinformation is not.
he's not selling anything. he's saying that he thinks its a bad idea to have young people take the vaccine. I happen to agree with Joe on this one piont.
and really? everyone knows he's like a goofball. not a doctor...can you not make up your own mind? and by the way the only entity thats been accused over and over of violations- or snake oil is pfizer...
this doesn't include the private lawsuits.....so need I go on?

I'm glad you agree with him, but Joe Rogan is NOT a doctor, a public health clinician, or an epidemiologist, therefore he should NOT be dispensing medical advice to ANYONE. He's got a huge platform that can sway millions of people, and he's doesn't have the right to pontificate on vaccines, COVID, or Dr. Fauci. Pfizer's issues have nothing to do with Rogan's stupidity.
it's actually not vaccine mis information (I wont bore you with reams of data around that) rather i'll just remind you that its another point of view and part of what we value here, a right to expression. And ironic that the singer who sings to us to keep on rocking in the free world is a bit of a hypocrite by not supporting free speech.
what is he afraid of? are we so incapable of making up our own minds?
Or is it just the ongoing censorship of our medical voices? how is this "vaccine mis information" when my teenager is required to have a vaccination to finish high school, a vaccination that is more harmful to him than the disease, which he has already recovered from and acquired immunity for? I would prefer to say it is gross malpractice and criminal. mis information doesn't quite cut it.
Joe Rogan might be an idiot but thats up to you to make up your mind about. and if you have a mind enough to disagree, you can simply not listen to him.
Tell Neil it's almost as stupid as suggesting that we should cancel Leonard Cohen because he is depressing and could cause harm.
if the musicians need to unite, its maybe about not playing at shows that demand vax mandates to get in, countless shows that have ironically been cancelled because all the vaxed people end up getting covid.
Mandates don't work, vaccines are a personal choice and censorship is evil. we have been
through this already - ask any European who has a grandparent. so yeah so long Neil!
Meanwhile although I might not agree with your politics Tom, I love this substack and your taste in music. thanks for all the good work ;)
You are, obviously, a victim and/or spreader of the misinformation. The vaccine isn't harmful to anyone, let alone "more harmful than the disease" which has killed millions already. Recovering from COVID also doesn't grant immunity for more than a few months, while a small series of vaccinations gives a deal more immunity than that. "Our medical voices" are not being censored. Here's free choice for you: Artists have a choice not to be on Spotify, listeners have a choice not to pay for Spotify, and Spotify has a choice of which podcasters they want to host. Those are all free choices.
It may not be harmful, but of course you have no idea if that's true. You spread the information you've been fed, just like the other side does. It's way too soon to know anything conclusively.
It isn't too soon to know what we already know, inclusively. Unlike you, I do not get "fed" by con artists. I am advised by the most respected scientists, physicians and public health officials in the world, and while they're continued to be healthy discussions and disagreements among them, there are also areas of overwhelming consensus. If you go to your own family doctor, there is greater than 99% chance that you will hear the same thing from that person.
You need to get away from radio hosts and other crazy people on YouTube, because those people are all 100% in the business of telling you what you want to hear, for money, rather than telling you the truth as a concrete precept of professional ethics. If you want to see this as something that has two sides, those are the two sides. On your side, con artists who are operating in a realm of pure profit and manipulation, and on my side, the most respected experts in the world who are bound by professional ethics, and for whom appearing betraying those professional ethics would mean the end of their career.
Leave it to Neil..stand up
I hope that other major artists quickly follow. That could cause Spotify to reconsider what Rogan is really worth to them.

Sure ... but not your choice, Natasha, to lie to people about vaccines and diseases.
