Gosh, I love Adventures of Simon Simon, and Extrapolation, yet it is strange to imagine the same artist creating in both those recording, so different and original. I've been hunting for Tales from the Algonquin for a while (ECM is not the easiest to ferret out the back catalogues aside from their biggest artists). It is really remarkable following Surman's journey.
I still have not heard Algonquin! Really liking everything w/ Stu Martin and Barre I heard, and also Dieter (and Dieter's own stuff). It's true re ECM -- must have been limited pressings in the US for anything not the Koln concert or Metheny.....
And subscription is needed for ECM on YouTube, which could be valuable, but I am a physical media guy - unless for teaching. It made things difficult on the Seshjawns when I was trying for some prime Gary Valente w/ Carla Bley and some of those cool early Free works by Maupin & Priester. I'm also still hunting for that Cowell Illusion Suite (maybe never on CD?).

That brings back memories, not only of that great album, but that era of ECM when so many innovative routes were explored. I feel like they are so bland now, including that new Surman release. It's interesting to hear him using acoustic instruments to get the ostinato sequencer sound of albums like Withholding Pattern, but it is so subdued like every ECM jazz release these days, You should check out his Live at Woodstock Town Hall release with Stu Martin. Wild.
Sigh you are not wrong re ECM, tho some of the Surman I think is beautiful -- love the instrumentation of this group. have not heard Woodstock Town Hall! it's one of a list of records he's on that I need to check. Thanks for that!!!!
as usual....thanks for the great tip!! You've been consistent for over 30 + Years!!!!
