Was That Dragon Man on 97X Radio?
An audio followup to this week's post about my tape trade with David Johansen
I have no idea if David Johansen was already thinking about his Mansion of Fun radio show when I interviewed him in the 1980s. But I do know he was obsessive about music, and at that time the radio was a primary way to feed that obsession — in part thanks to DJs who not only knew how to activate listener curiousity about amazing records, but knew how to telegraph their emotion (for the music, for life generally) via brief, pithy introductions.
Below are three excerpts from the tape I received in trade with Johansen after the interview I wrote about here. He wrote the words “Dragon Man” on it; I have no idea if that’s the 97X DJ he latched onto when visiting Trinidad…
This last one resonated with me, in a “DJ as truthtelling philosopher” way. Which, of course, is exactly the approach Johansen took on Mansion of Fun….
