I like a good purpose-driven playlist. Especially during the holidays. At least during “normal” holidays, when we’d all be doing normal stuff like going to open houses and whipping up seasonal cocktails for twenty. In those situations, you need music you can set and forget, a playlist that’ll run for awhile.
My requirements for this were fairly simple: All instrumental (one exception: Ella Fitzgerald). Mostly jazz, mostly from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Somewhat upbeat. Varied instrumentation.
Put these short albums in a shuffle situation, stir, and enjoy for hours…..
Kenny Burrell: Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas
Jimmy Smith: Christmas Cookin’
Ramsey Lewis Trio: Sound of Christmas
Cyrus Chestnut: Blessed Quietness
Vince Guaraldi Trio: A Charlie Brown Christmas
Ella Fitzgerald: Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas
Duke Ellington Orchestra: Nutcracker Suite (now available on Three Suites compilation)
